What Makes Me Feel I Matter?
CONTRIBUTE — Finding meaning in this chapter of life
Different experiences help us feel that our lives matter. Rate how important each one is to your sense of meaning—not how often you currently experience it.
1 = Not important 2 = Slightly important 3 = Moderately important 4 = Very important 5 = Extremely important
This is a personal reflection exercise, not a validated psychological test. There are no right or wrong answers.
Your Top Sources of Meaning
Your highest ratings show what feels most important to you. A high rating does not necessarily mean that need is currently being met. If several ratings tie, any of them may be equally important.
Part 2 — From Meaning to Contribution
Contribution isn't about how much you do. It's about finding meaningful ways to share who you are, what you know, and what you care about.
Some possibilities to consider:
- Sharing wisdom: Mentor a younger person, teach a practical skill, help someone navigate a life transition, or share lessons from your career and life experiences.
- Being creative: Write stories, contribute photography to a community project, make handmade items for a cause, or use your artistic talents to bring people together.
- Being connected: Start a walking group, organize neighborhood gatherings, welcome newcomers, or reach out to people who might feel isolated.
- Making a difference: Volunteer for an animal rescue, support a local food pantry, participate in environmental conservation, or advocate for a cause that matters to you.
- Personal growth: Learn a language and help new learners practice, develop gardening skills and share your harvest, or explore a subject you could eventually teach.
- Offering practical help: Assist with community events, help a nonprofit stay organized, repair something for a neighbor, or offer occasional transportation when you're able.
You don't have to make a commitment today. Which idea sparks enough interest that you'd like to learn more about it?
Curiosity is enough to begin. Exploring an idea doesn't mean you're obligated to pursue it.
